Kenyatta's Stone
Joslyn Gaines Vanderpool, Illustrations Beau Allen

Kenyatta's Stone is a catalyst to begin conversations with youth about people of African descent, including their stories, histories, and contributions to the world, in addition to the harrowing legacy of being enslaved for centuries in America.  Kenyatta helps in this crucial task of informing younger children about a difficult and painful time in history that still has an impact today. She is a beautiful little girl from an African village who has a wonderful life with her umama (mother), her utata (father), her nana (grandmother) and her dog Kozo, until one fateful day when she's taken away onto a huge ship filled with other African villagers. Throughout her journey she never gives up on being free once more and returning to her homeland. Her believe that enslaving others is wrong, never falters. She becomes a fierce warrior and voice of the unfree.
